In 2012, Kids Vision for Life Orange County (Kids Vision for Life-OC) began as a collaboration with the Alcon Foundation, Marshall B. Ketchum College of Optometry (formerly Southern California College of Optometry), Children’s Health Initiative of Orange County (CHI-OC) and Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) to provide vision services to area schools. Together, Kids Vision for Life-OC has provided 14,825 screenings in 32 schools, provided exams for 2,994 students and dispensed 2,673 new prescription eyeglasses to Orange County students at no cost. There is not another service that oversees the screenings, conducts on-site examinations and manufactures the prescription glasses for distribution to Orange County elementary school students—eliminating the most common barriers to corrected vision in youth. The program directly serves the needs of underserved students in Orange County.
In 2015, EVF’s Orange County Kids Vision for Life program, was awarded a multiyear grant from CalOptima health system in the amount of $500,000 to lead a coalition of seven organizations to provide culturally appropriate vision services to 25,000 low-income children enrolled in Orange County public schools.
